Four Suffolk police officers helped save the life of a 48-year-old Bethpage man having a heart attack in a Huntington Station store Friday morning, police said.

Garside in NewsdayAn emergency 10:10 a.m. phone call brought Second Precinct officers John Fenelius, Scott Guido, Robert Romeo and James Garside to N & S Lighting at 702 East Jericho Tpke.

Aided by medical personnel from the Huntington Community First Aid Squad, the four officers started cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and Fenelius used an automatic external defibrillator.

Garside, who has advanced medical training, inserted a tube down the victim's throat to allow oxygen to the lungs. Garside also hooked the man up to an intravenous line.

After about half an hour, the man was stabilized and Huntington Community First Aid Squad took him to Huntington Hospital where he was admitted in stable condition.

The heart attack victim's name was not made public by the police.

Lieutenant Brian Ellicott (EMD) looses fight agains cancer

Today at 13:26 Lieutenant Brian Ellicott (EMD) surrounded by his wife, father and best friend lost his fight against the cancer in his body. Brian battled non Hodgkins type lymphoma that started in his chest and eventually spread to his back causing him to have paralysis from the chest down.

On September 11, 2001 Brian was assigned to Station 11 as an EMT. He worked over one hundred hours the first two weeks alone in the rescue and recovery effort.

I have known Brian for many years. He was a good man. He was a member of EMS for many years.

He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Marianne and I have prepared Brians wife, Debbie for this possibility. I promised Brian that if anything happened to him that I would fight for his family. We have already started that fight.

What I ask from you the membership. I need all off duty members to attend his funeral. Brians death was caused from his exposure and dedication. We need to send a message to the city that we will not stand for what is happening to our friends and most important that we support the family.
